WWF Strategic Framework - Political Economy Analysis for Conservation Impact (PEACI)

Published

This is a nicely written overview of Political Economy Analysis as applied to Conservation problems. It elaborates the familiar structure of Foundations; Rules of the Game; and People and Organisations as the basic analytical building blocks of PEA, with conservation examples.  It also highlights the importance of understanding PEA Dynamics linking the different blocks.  It also touches on other approaches including: the ‘5 Whys’ approach to problem analysis (drawn from Matt Andrews’ Building State Capability approach); the assessment of Authority, Acceptance, and Ability of different stakeholders; and Complexity matrices for dealing with regional political economy problems.  It concludes with useful advice on how to apply PEA in practice.

WWF’s framework elaborating what PEA is and how to use it to improve programming and policy action on conservation problems.
