The Policy Practice hosted this discussion between John Githongo and David Anderson on Politics and Development in Kenya. The discussants explore the background to the electoral violence in early 2008, and examine the nature of the state, political competition and the elite in Kenya, as well as the role of development agencies.

David Anderson is Professor of African Politics and the Director of African Politics at the University of Oxford. His main research interests are the history and politics in East Africa, and his latest book is entitled "Violence and Politics in Kenya".

John Githongo is a former journalist and head of the Kenya Chapter of Transparency International. In 2003 he became Permanent Secretary for Governance and Ethics in the Office of the President, but left the country in 2005 after revealing evidence of continuing high level corruption. He is a Senior Associate member of St Antony's College Oxford, Vice-President of World Vision, and Principal of The Policy Practice. He is currently writing a book on corruption in Africa.
